What is the cost of building a windmill to generate electricity and how much land do you need for just one?

I want to be as energy efficient as possible and one day when I retire I want to be living on an island and I am thinking about building a windmill to geenrate electricity. How much does it cost to build a windmill, how much land would you need to put one on it, and how long does a windmill last until you need it replaced? I will also use solar power but my main question is about windmills, how much would one cost?

Today a windmill will probably cost ten times what it will cost five years from now.

There is under developement small windmills for use in the USA which will feed back into the electric grid sufficient energy to greatly offset electric usage. We must remember that electric energy is very very expensive to store. The cost of such a windmill is being designed to cost somewhere between $30 and $60 thousand dollars installed.

Now if you were living on a desert island what would the need be for electricity? Just live naturally.. Go to bed when the sun goes down and use a hand pump to raise water from a well. To power your computer and radio use solar.
